Mar 4th, 2012 Beautiful starry night!
My telescope had been on loan, but since it recently came back my way, and since tonight is so nice out, I decided to do a quick set-up out in the street and see what I could see.
There were several planets out - Venus, Jupiter & especially bright Mars to name a few - but the moon was by far the "star" of the night. Atmospheric disturbances, city light and street vibrations from nearby traffic made viewing the planets difficult to appreciate, but tonight's waxing gibbous moon is bright and high in the sky, and was therefore largely impervious to these obscuring effects.
Of course I just had to hold a camera up the the lens of the telescope and try to capture the moment -- and I gotta say, it actually turned out really nicely :) If you click on the image, you'll get the HUGE view, so large you can practically see little green men going about their business on the moon's surface!

Click here to read about the first time I ever held a camera up to a telescope. You should try it, too - it's a ton of fun :) Tonight's telescope & camera specifications: I used an 8'' Dobsonian mounted reflector telescope and a Canon PowerShot A3000IS 10 mega pixel digital camera. Recommended further reading: National Audubon Society Field Guide to the Night Sky - chock full of information and richly-colored photos & charts, complete with several years worth of planetary locations & celestial events.
Do what you love - with respect to others -
and give it all you've got!
The universe will be a much better place for it!
